Peter and the Starcatcher

Peter & The Starcatcher is a Tony Award-winning play that reveals how Peter Pan transformed from a miserable orphan into the Boy Who Never Grew Up.

The Midland Center for the Arts tasked us with producing an online promotional video that would excite fans of the original Peter Pan stories without giving away too much of the plot.

Peter and the Starcatcher is a simple production brought to life with boundless imagination. To match the show’s simple, whimisical mood, we decided upon an art and animation style inspired by puppet shows.

Because they knew the piece better than us, the theater’s staff wrote the initial script. We worked together to refine it, then we sketched up concepts and produced an animatic.

Bringing it to Life

With the animatic complete, we began producing artwork. The two-dimensional, watercolor art style is inspired by children’s stories. Like the play itself, the art is extremely simple and totally fun.

The completed artwork was handed off to an animator who, using the animatic as a guide, brought it to life. The characters move like they’re being controlled by a child playing with toys.

Once the art and animation were complete, we added a final voiceover and end-slate that matches the play’s other promotional materials.
